Pleasanton, Alameda County
Pleasanton was named for Civil War general Alfred Pleasonton, with the spelling changed by a clerical slip. A neon arch from 1932 spans Main Street, where many of the storefronts date to the late 1800s. The county fairgrounds at the edge of downtown include a horse racing track laid out in 1858, the oldest one-mile track in the country.
